Kid's Kitchen

Lesson 1: Pizza Dough

Part 2: Pretzels

A continuation of Lesson 1: Pizza Dough

This is a lot of fun to make with kids. And a BIG hit! Everyone loves Pretzels!

Recipe: use the Pizza Dough recipe found in Kid's Kitchen.

In addition to the Pizza Dough:

4 cups water
1/4 cup baking soda
Salt, Poppy Seeds, Sesame Seeds, Dried Herbs, Cinnamon and Sugar...Toppings etc.
Melted Butter

To make:

Divide your pizza dough into balls. About the size of a kid's palm.

Roll your balls into long snakes. Kid's love doing this!

Here is the tricky part....take the ends and cross them in the middle, leaving an open loop at the top and extra dough at the ends. It will look somewhat like a fish.

Twist the middle 1 time (where the dough crosses and meets).

Now lift up the ends and attach to the top part of the pretzel (or the loop). Push the ends softly to the top of the pretzel to connect. Now your pretzels should look something like this...

Practice. And remember, they will taste good, even if they don't look good.

After you have twisted and created...set aside for a minute or so.

Now make your baking soda bath. Yes, we will give the pretzels a bath. This helps it so the pretzels get that deep brown looking color all around and are still soft in the middle.

Bring your water to soft boil, turn the temperature down and add your baking soda. Keep your pot of baking soda water on the stove on low, to help keep the baking soda dissolved.

Now dip your pretzels in the warm water. Make sure the baking soda is dissolved or just stir before you put in your pretzels.

Remove pretzel after 5 seconds and place on cooking rack to drain off excess water.

Repeat with all pretzels. Preheat oven to 475 degrees. Yes, that hot. It cooks fast.

Place pretzels on greased cookie sheet. While they are still a little wet, sprinkle with salt or other toppings.

Cook in oven for 7-9 minutes or until golden brown.

Remove and brush with melted butter. Brush once with butter...let it absorb, then 1 more time.

Enjoy! Have fun making them with your kids!
