Kids in the Kitchen.
All these recipes, I have personally taught kids how to make. I teach a Kid's Kitchen class once a month, to teach kids how to cook.
Yes, flour was all over my floor. Yes, an apron was a must. Yes, it was a learning experience.
BUT....
I was teaching 8 kids at a time.
AND....
Yes, they had a blast. Yes, they love every minute. Yes, they are learning a valuable talent. Yes, they want to keep cooking. Yes, they all went home and cooked for their families. Yes, it is well worth the time to teach kids how to cook.
Lesson 1: Pizza Dough
Each cooking class we make 3 recipes.
Lesson #1: We made Pizza, Pretzels, and Sticky Buns.
Basic Pizza dough recipe:
*We used this dough for all 3 recipes.
1 1/2 cups water
1/4 cup olive oil
2 Tb yeast
1 Tb sugar
2 cups all purpose flour
1 tsp salt
2 cups wheat flour
To make:
Get a large bowl. Add your yeast to the bowl. Meanwhile, measure your cold water in a liquid measuring cup and place in the microwave to warm. Cook 1 minute 20 seconds.
Add water to yeast. Add oil and sugar. Sugar makes the dough activate (always add sugar first, add salt after you add some flour). Then mix in 2 cups of white flour with a wire wisk. Add your salt and mix.
Then use a spoon and add in your wheat flour. Knead with your hands. Punch it and push it and fold it. Then do it again, until you push it and it bounces back. Then you are done kneading. Mix till enough flour is incorporated into the dough and no longer sticky. You might not use all the flour. Remove excess flour.
This recipe makes 3 large pizza's or 8-12 small-individual pizza's.
You can start rolling out your dough right away. Doesn't need to rise a long time. Let the rest of the dough rest and rise in bowl while you roll out your pizza's. *You will notice the dough rising as you work. If you want to let the dough rise for 20 minutes before you roll out pizza's...great! (But you don't have to).
Divide the dough into balls. How many pizza's do you want to make? That will determine how many balls of dough you will have.
You are ready to roll out your pizza dough. Take some cornmeal and sprinkle on the work surface (I like to use Parchment paper or wax paper, so it doesn't stick). Roll dough on cornmeal.
Place on Pizza pan or greased cookie sheet and spread your sauce, cheese and toppings.
Cook pizza's at 430 degrees for about 8-10 minutes. Until light brown on edges and cheese is bubbly.
Take out, let cool for a few minutes. Slice and enjoy!
Pretzel and Sticky Bun recipes....coming soon.
Love it.
